Flyers can be an easy way to get the word out about your company or event. You have to do them right, though, otherwise they’re essentially useless. If you avoid these common flyer design mistakes, your flyers can be an extremely effective promotional technique.
7 Common Flyer Design Mistakes
1. Low Quality Images
If you choose to include images on your flyer, make sure they are of decent quality. In other words, make sure they are clear. They won’t add anything to the flyer if people are unable to make out what is in the photo. Images can be a great addition to any marketing campaign, but you have to use them well.
2. Including Useless Information/Too Busy
It is tempting to try to include all of the information you can about the event or your store. However, this opens the door for overcrowding on your flyer, which then leads to people not knowing where to look. If there’s too much for people to take in, they won’t know what to remember.
3. Missing Important Information
Make sure you include the “who, what, when, where and why” of what is happening. Include those points and people will know all the essential information, then if there’s anything more, work from there.
4. Hard to Read Text/Spelling Errors
Make sure your flyer is legible. Choose wisely when deciding what font to use. You don’t want it to be too crazy because people should be able to look over everything and take it all in quickly. Also look it over to check for spelling errors before printing out hundreds of copies. Typos can confuse people if they’re bad enough and can also be a turn-off.
5. Boring Headline
Grab people’s attention right away with an intriguing headline. Your headline should be both informative and interesting. This doesn’t mean you need to come up with some amazing pun or make it incredibly funny. Just try to get a little creative with it.
6. Colors That Don’t Go Together
If you’re planning to put up flyers that aren’t in black and white, choose colors that go well together. A bad color scheme won’t look good and could turn people away.
7. No Target Audience
Who do you want to attract? Make sure your flyers speak directly to them. If you want to attract teenagers, appeal to teenagers. If you want to attract older adults, appeal to older adults. Flyers don’t have much, if any, impact if they are too broad and don’t target anyone.
